Coloradan Jennifer Kupcho fires personal-best 64 to vault into lead at Women’s Tallahassee NCAA Regional
by Gary Baines

It didn’t take long for Coloradan Jennifer Kupcho to go from 10th to first place in the Women’s NCAA Division I Regional tournament in Tallahassee, Fla.

A bogey-free round of 8-under-par 64 can do that for you.

The Wake Forest junior, who won an NCAA Regional title in 2017, vaulted into the lead with her eight-birdie day on Tuesday.

The round of 64 was not only Kupcho’s personal best in competition, but it established a single-round scoring record for the Wake Forest women’s program.

Kupcho (pictured), a U.S. Curtis Cup team member who’s No. 3 in the Women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings, stands at 10-under-par 134 after two days and will take a one-stroke lead into Wednesday’s final round.

Amanda Doherty of Florida State and Sarah Rhee of Washington share second place at 135, while four other golfers are at 136.

The top six team finishers — and three individuals not on those teams — from each regional will advance to the NCAA National Championships, set for May 18-23 in Stillwater, Okla. Kupcho’s Wake Forest squad currently sits in seventh place, three strokes out of sixth.

Also in Tallahassee, the University of Denver is in 13th place, 16 strokes out of sixth. The Pioneers shot a 2-over-par 290 on Tuesday, leaving them at 11-over 587 overall.

Meanwhile, at the San Franciso Regional, the University of Colorado is again on the bubble to make it to the NCAA Finals after missing by a stroke each of the last two years.

With the top six teams advancing, CU shares ninth place, sitting two shots behind sixth-place Oklahoma State. The Buffs posted a second-round total of 10-over-par 298, leaving them at 582 overall.

CU senior Brittany Fan, who shared the individual lead after round 1, fell back to fourth place. A second-round 75 put her at 3-under 141, two strokes behind leader Hira Naveed of Pepperdine.

The Regionals will conclude on Wednesday.
